Cash App, formerly known as Square Cash, was created by Square, Inc., a company founded by Jack Dorsey (also the co-founder and CEO of Twitter) and Jim McKelvey in 2009. Square initially focused on providing small businesses with an easy and affordable method to accept credit card payments. However, the company recognized a need for a simple way for individuals to send and receive money digitally without the hassle of sharing bank account details.
To address this need, Square introduced Square Cash (now known as Cash App) in October 2013. Initially, the app allowed users to send money to each other using just their email address or a unique link, referred to as a ‘$Cashtag,’ via an email with the dollar amount in the subject line.
Over time, Cash App has evolved and added new features, such as the ability to receive paychecks via direct deposit, invest in stocks and Bitcoin, and a physical debit card called the ‘Cash Card.’ Today, Cash App is widely popular as a peer-to-peer money transfer platform and has significantly expanded its services and user base.
