Every time I hear someone say, “Black men need to step up,” I feel it in my chest—not because it’s new, but because it’s the same tired line being recycled again and again.
It’s always a demand. Never a conversation. Never a question like:
- “What happened to you?”
- “How did you make it this far?”
- “What are you carrying that nobody talks about?”
Truth is that a lot of us have stepped up. We’ve raised kids with little support. We’ve built businesses from scratch. We’ve stayed solid when everything around us fell apart. But when something goes wrong, we’re the first to get blamed and the last to be heard.
You can’t rebuild Black families on shame. You do it with truth, healing, and accountability—for everybody. Because we all got wounds. We all got history.
So let’s stop acting like Black men are the broken link.
We’re not the problem.
We’re part of the solution—if we’re given room to heal, lead, and be seen as more than just a headline or a hashtag.
Let’s change the narrative. And let’s be honest while we do it.
